Hi, Since being on MTX I've been experiencing hair loss, mostly when I wash my hair and comb it out afterwards.Sad Does the hair loss last the whole time while taking MTX or does it settle down after a while? My hair used to be fairly long and thick but now, because it's got so fine I've had to have it cut to give it some shape.I read that when you stop taking MTX the hair improves and returns to normal but what if you are on MTX indefinately?Do other drugs like Sulpha also cause hair loss?I will definately be mentioning it to the rheumy nurse when I see her next month. How do any of you cope with the hair loss? Hi Brenda,

When I first started taking mtx my hair became much thinner but I'm still taking it and my hair is almost back to normal.
So yes, it does settle down after a while, or it did in my experience.
I don't know about sulpha because I didn't take it for very long.
Hope yours settles down soon.

Love, Doreen xx

Hi Brenda,

I was on the triple therapy for 2.5 years, now off Sulphasalazine as I no longer require it. Yes I had hair loss too, but as Doreen says It settled down and my hair is fine now. Your's will probably settle down too, try not to worry. Lorna x Smile

Sadly my hair has remained thin but having spent my life with straight hair, i now have sort of curly/wavy hair! At least it keeps things interesting. My GP thought it might have been my thyroid playing up as i had most of it removed when i was 17 and there is a higher chance it will become underactive as i get older, but blood tests show it is fine.

Hope things settle for you soon.]

Hi Brenda

Sorry to hear about your hair loss. I too lost my hair when I first went on methotrexate but it has since recovered even though I have doubled the dose. The sulphasalazine did not seem to have any affect on my hair.
Hope it soon sorts itself out.
Smile

Hi again,
I think I may ring the rheumy nurse tomorrow and ask if increasing my Folic Acid would help.I only take two Folic Acid the day after the MTX although I know some of you take it every day except the MTX day.Not sure why this differs from person to person.I've only ever been told to take the Folic Acid once a week.I now dread washing my hair !! Hi Brenda,

How much are you losing, I never actually noticed it, it was my hairdresser that mentioned it. It wasn't much with me but my hair is really curly now, I used to perm it for many years and never actually realised I had curly hair until a few years ago. Re.. the Folic Acid my rheumatologist told me the methotrexate destroys the Folic Acid, thats why we have to take a daily dose. We all seem to be told different things. Lorna Smile

Hi Lorna, My rheumy nurse has now lowered my MTX to 5mg a week and upped my Folic Acid to one a day for four days but I havn't noticed a slow down with the hair loss yet.My hairdresser said the hair is breaking off halfway and also coming out at the folicle(not sure if that's spelt correctly!).When I washed it a couple of days ago I couldn't believe the amount left in the comb after combing out the wet hair!!Sad The hairdresser also told me not to use the hairdryer on too hot of a setting so I may try letting the hair dry nauturally without heat. When I was just taking Hydroxy I didn't have this problem so it must be the combination of the MTX and the Hydroxy.
